Heyla, Misty fans!
Herald-Mage Danya has one more article to code for the next issue of The Compass Rose, and then it will be available online. Sorry for the delay. (In addition to having to bring a new computer system online, Danya has found out she's pregnant again, so things have gotten a bit behind <g>.)
This month we're going to take a brief hiatus from our artist interviews to talk about another type of art: costume design. As several of our chapters gear up to attend special events, Renaissance Faires and conventions, we've been receiving questions yet again about how to find or make various Misty-oriented costumes. We'll start by discussing the most frequent requests: Herald's Whites.
In Arrow's Flight, Misty describes Talia's whites as a raime shirt, leather breeches, and a leather tunic that pulled on over her head. Everything was in white. That's the basic Herald's uniform.
When Talia has to attend a formal court function in Arrow's Flight, she wears an ankle-length gown of silk and velvet, slippers that tie to her ankles with ribbons, no train, detachable sleeves, and a silver ribbon in her hair. It's unclear whether the outfit is all in white, but presumably that is the case since Talia is on duty as Queen's Own at the time, and all Heralds must wear all white when they are on duty. Queen Selenay also wears a white shirt and skirt, with either a white tunic or vest, when she holds court; her materials are usually velvet and silk as well.
Cloaks vary from horseman's type to full-length with hood. The important factor is that the cloaks are completely white.
In Winds of Change Elspeth gives instructions to the hertasi who want to improve the look of her whites. Essentially, she tells them that the clothing must be nonreflective, silent (no bells or anything else that will make noise), tailored (at least to the point that nothing will catch on anything while she's fighting or riding), and, above all, white. No off-white, cream, eggshell or anything else is acceptable. The hertasi come back with something that makes her look something like a female version of Buffalo Bill: cut-out leather vest with fringe, cut-out leather trousers, silk shirt, and both half boots and full boots. Everything is in white, as per Elspeth's instructions.
When Elspeth gets back to Haven in Winds of Fury, the Heralds in the Circle see her new whites and start lusting after them <g>. The result is that Herald's Whites are still available in the "uniform" style that Talia wore but individualized versions, such as Elspeth's, start cropping up, particularly among the new Herald-Mages.
So on our alternate timeline, people have quite a bit of latitude when it comes to creating Whites. Stick to Elspeth's rules:
- All white.
- Nothing shiny.
- Nothing that makes noise.
- Close-fitting so as not to impede riding or fighting.
Medieval and Renaissance patterns are recommended. Simplicity pattern 8587 A (vest-you might want to exclude the short sleeves), B (shirt with slit at neck), C (trousers) works well. Simplicity pattern 9452 offers several options for a cloak/cape. Remember that there are no buttons or zippers or Velcro mentioned; everything fastens with ties, laces or other such devices. Muslin or linen would work well for the shirt, although you could certainly go to silk if you were so inclined. If you can't afford leather or suede for the trousers and vest, there are a variety of fabrics available in white. Steer clear of things like polyester. Cotton, linen, silk and other such natural fabrics are preferred. Artists' renditions of the boots vary, but since the Heralds use stirrups, some sort of heel would be advisable, even though that isn't strictly true to medieval style. Either half boots or full boots (below the knee) would be acceptable. (There is nothing to suggest that Heralds use the sort of hip-high or thigh-high cavalry boots that show up in the Renaissance. Also, most Renaissance Faires prefer it if you keep leather fringe off your boots.) You can decorate your Whites with embroidery, beading and so forth to your heart's content as long as you don't jingle when you walk <g>.
We'll take a look at some other costume design ideas in future issues of this newsletter as space permits.
Zhai'helleva,
Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar

Collegium News:
We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at Persona handouts and submission instructions.
You need a release form (online at Release form instructions) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.
All personae materials should be sent to the QO address or submitted by e-mail to shashtah@gmail.com and healermoon@gmail.com.
We have no personae to announce this month, but almost 40 people have them in progress (including Danya's Adept rank; see below). We hope to see some new ones next month.
From Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn:
Heyla!
I'm sorry the coffee chat didn't materialize in March. Would anyone like to try for some time in the first week of May when Moonstar will be in Southern California for a visit? Contact me at shashtah@gmail.com if you're interested, and I'll try to set something up.
The QO trip to the Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire will be Saturday, June 2nd. Please let me know if your would like me to order a ticket for you. (Remind me, even if you've already told me. I tend to be extremely scatter-brained while I'm pregnant, and I don't want to accidentally leave anyone out.) Tickets should be in roughly the $15 range.
The QO Midsummer Festival for Southern California will be held June 23rd in Aliso Viejo. Contact me at shashtah@gmail.com for directions and additional information. (Anyone else trying to put together a Midsummer Festival? Do let us know so we can advertise it in the newsletter.)
I'm also working on my Adept rank <g>. I published a book (and more articles than I care to think about) on the historical King Arthur. I'm working on the paper discussing the ethics and morality of Adept-level power and possession, and I'm currently researching constraints that must be placed on the arbitrator. Oh, and I learned the magic tricks <g>. Now I just have to find the time to finish all that … Any of you other Herald-Mages working on the next rank?
Zhai'helleva,
Danya
Fan Messages:
The newsletter is routinely posted to the Net. If you are concerned about your address falling into unfriendly hands, don't place a fan message! You may answer fan messages without ever placing one yourself. The editors reserve the right to edit--and shorten!--all messages. (Remember to tell your Post Office about your alternative name if you wish to receive mail addressed to your persona at an addressed where you receive mail under your real name.)
The only "fee" for a fan message is to write to two other people. If your mailbox is empty, don't complain--write letters!
- From Jennifer Mackay-Douglas (vze28fbf@verizon.net) to all her old pen pals (and some new ones, I hope): I got married in May 99 and I moved around so much I lost track of my old pen pals. My interests include reading soft SF, short stories (primarily Asimov's because of budget), and fantasy. Nonfiction topics I usually read include: vegetarian cooking, pet care, natural health, history (my hubby and I do Civil War reenacting), and science research on genetic engineering (for my in-progress SF novel). I love going to SF/F cons, enjoy roleplay gaming, watching movies and TV. (I especially love Farscape on the Sci-Fi Channel.) I love all forms of Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and a ton of other shows and movies. I enjoy reading Misty, Tad Williams, Kate Elliott, Llewellyn, Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, Ursula K. LeGuin, Louise Cooper, Tara K. Harper, and many more! Write me snail mail or email and I'll write you back. :-) Send snail letters via the US Post Awful to: Jennifer Mackay-Douglas, 970 Main Street, Clifton Park, NY 12065.
- From Crystal Sarakas Kocher (crys@stny.rr.com) 26-year-old radio/television producer looking for friends who enjoy long, silly conversations, dreaming of Valdemar and other such things. I would love to hear from old friends that I have lost touch with over the years and from new friends, too!
- From White Winds Soceress Shadow Weaver. I am looking for gothic and sci/fi fantasy events in Ohio/KY/Indiana/West Virginia to merchant at. If you have any info please e-mail cimeshadow@aol.com or snail mail Lisa Brawner at P.O. Box 8335, Lexington, KY 40533-8335.
- From Herald-Mage Hedge Wizard Jensen Redstart/Kat Knafelc dragonfodder@gmail.com. 22-year-old college grad going back for her Master's in Ecology in the fall. Loves reading, writing, fandom, Scooby-Doo and comic books.

- From Herald-Mage Danya. To: All. Re: Cookbook. If you've read my persona submission in CoV, you know that I like making up medieval-style recipes. I'm thinking about compiling a cookbook based on meals that Misty describes in the Velgarth series. If anyone is currently reading the books, could you note the book and page any food items are mentioned on and send them to me at shashtah@gmail.com? Thanks!
