Queen's Own
The Official Mercedes Lackey Fan Club
P.O. Box 749 Laguna Beach, CA 92652 USA
Series 3, Vol. 2, No. 6 June 1, 2001

Heyla, Misty fans!
A thousand apologies for taking so long to put out the June newsletter! As most of you know, Moonstar moved from Montana to California at the time we would normally be putting together the newsletter, and Danya's gestational diabetes went out of control, leaving her feeling too ill to put the newsletter together herself. Fortunately, "real life" is getting somewhat back under control so we can get this newsletter out <G>.
We do not have an artist interview this time (If you are an artist who has not replied to the questionnaire yet, we'd sure like to see something come in for the next newsletter-hint, hint <G>.). We do, however, have a report on the first major event for this incarnation of Queen's Own: the Official Queen's Own outing to the Renaissance Pleasure Faire of Southern California!
Twelve of us made it (At least we think all twelve got there; we failed to make connections with three of the attendees.). Some us were in costume. Danya wore her new whites (shirt, pants and vest-still can't find those white boots!). We spent quite a bit of time in the kids section (petting zoo, pony rides, crafts, and so forth) because a big chunk of our party consisted of children. (Nice to see those future fans coming along!) Most of us had Toad-in-the-Holes for lunch, which was a picnic near a lovely little lake that none of us remembered being there last year. The highlight of the day was the jousting (We're pretty sure we recognized some of the folks from Medieval Times out there.). We had a blast and hope to see more of you next year.
We also want to remind you about the Middsummer Festival, which will be held on Saturday, June 23rd. Message Danya at shashtah@gmail.com for details and directions. We're planning a BBQ at a local park, Misty-music (courtesy of Moonstar's CD collection), and good conversation (There's a fun play area for the kids as well.) We look forward to seeing you! (It's not too late to RSVP, if you have not already done so.)
Herald's Waystation reports that it held its first Renaissance Faire outing and had a grand time as well. You can read the details in the Queen's Own Delphi Forum.
Our very own Bard Magpie performed (with Minstrosity) at the Fantasy Faire in Walworth Wisconsin and the Waterloo Renaissance Festival in Waterloo, IA. She (and Minstrosity) will also be performing for all seven weekends of the Kansas City Faire.
And Cassandra Vuksa, editor of Austral'a'in, sends the following notice:
I have decided to run a competition. Till the end of June (the 30th) I will be collecting submissions for Austral'a'in, and the best one will win its author/artist/poet/etc a year's free membership of said newsletter, regardless of where they are located in the world.
Tempted? E-mail me at garou@netspeed.com.au with your submission!
Incidentally, I had someone recently send me a US $10 for a subscription renewal and I discovered that the banks charge $5 (Australian) to convert it. This means that at the current exchange rate US $10 is enough to pay for a year's membership of the newsletter! (Just a thought for those who can't get IRCs or money orders … ) It does have to be a note, not change, however, because the banks don't change change! :)
So send all your money (::laughs::) to:
Austral'a'in PO Box 1850 Woden ACT 2606 Australia
Until next month …
Zhai'helleva,
Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar

For definitions of our fannish jargon, read the 12-page booklet "Pros & Cons: An Introduction to Fandom" written by Elizabeth Barrette. Send $1.00 and a $0.34 stamp (or $1.00 and 2 IRCs) to Queen's Own, P.O. Box 749, Laguna Beach, CA, 92652. Make checks payable to "Linda Malcor" in US funds only.
Local chapters:
- Arrows OnLine: It's back! Arrows OnLine has returned as an official chapter of Queen's Own. To find them, go to Keyword Mercedes Lackey on AOL. Click on Mercedes Lackey Fandom. For the Arrows message boards, click on Mercedes Lackey Fan Group (The other option, Mercedes Lackey's Fiction, is a general discussion of Misty's books and is not part of Arrows.). If you get lost or have additional questions, contact the Arrows Dean, Herald Ryhannon Gaia Degent, at MistyKalia@aol.com.
- Austral'a'in: Austral'a'in is a chapter of QO that has been running for more than five years now. Despite the name, which is a combination of Latin and Shin'a'in for "People of the South", we don't just have members south of the equator. Rather, anyone is welcome! Snail Mail: Austral'a'in, c/o Cassandra Vuksa, P.O. Box 1850, Woden ACT 2606 Australia. E-mail: garou@netspeed.com.au.

We plan to hold get-togethers during a Rennie Faire centered in these states; details to be announced later. We will have a quarterly snail mail newsletter called Companion's Quarterly. We are not going to charge new members for the first 3 newsletters; after that it will be 75 cents per newsletter. We will also have an online, nonfiction newsletter. Look for details and other fun stuff when we launch our chapter website. Snail mail: Jan Tallevast, Rt 1 Box 137, Milford, Tx 76670. E-mail: heraldauralynn@hotmail.net and HeraldEnyo@gmail.com. Collegium News:
We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at Persona handouts and submission instructions.
You need a release form (online at Release form instructions) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.
All personae materials should be sent to the QO address or submitted by e-mail to shashtah@gmail.com and healermoon@gmail.com.
- Welcome to Tayledras Adept Fireblade k'Treva, Gifted with Mindspeech with Bondbirds, Humans and Other Races, and her Bondbird Kyr'na (a red-tailed hawk)! Kristi wrote about Fireblade and her family and her friends, drew a picture of her persona and wrote a poem.

From Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn:
Heyla, all!
I really enjoyed the Renaissance Faire trip, and I'm looking forward to the Midsummer Festival. Thankfully, I'm starting to feel a bit better, and it looks as if my doctors will have be back on my feet again soon. (As you have probably figured out by now, I don't do pregnancy well, but the kids sure come out cute <g>!)
Moonstar has almost finished settling into her new home. It's really nice having her only two doors down from me. That's going to make running the club a lot easier.
Speaking of the club, we have several submissions for personae pending. We're going through them now, and soon we will be getting back to those of you who have been waiting so patiently for our comments.
We've also had several longtime members of QO contact us, and their memberships have been activated. Check out the persona list at Persona directory for e-mail addresses of currently active members. (And if you spot any approved members who have not contacted us, we'd appreciate your contacting them and telling them about the club.)
There have been several e-mail and URL changes for various members and fanzines/newsletters. I'm getting to those as fast as I can. I'll also update the Firebird links in the near future; they updated their site, so I have to adjust the links.
The next issue of The Compass Rose will indeed be out as soon as I get the time to edit the last article. Sorry for the delay!
Please keep sending art. I'm in dreadfully short supply, which is part of what is causing the delay in getting the newsletter online.
Zhai'helleva,
Danya
Fan Messages:
The newsletter is routinely posted to the Net. If you are concerned about your address falling into unfriendly hands, don't place a fan message! You may answer fan messages without ever placing one yourself. The editors reserve the right to edit--and shorten!--all messages. (Remember to tell your Post Office about your alternative name if you wish to receive mail addressed to your persona at an addressed where you receive mail under your real name.)
The only "fee" for a fan message is to write to two other people. If your mailbox is empty, don't complain--write letters!
- From Jennifer Mackay-Douglas (vze28fbf@verizon.net) to all her old pen pals (and some new ones, I hope): I got married in May 99 and I moved around so much I lost track of my old pen pals. My interests include reading soft SF, short stories (primarily Asimov's because of budget), and fantasy. Nonfiction topics I usually read include: vegetarian cooking, pet care, natural health, history (my hubby and I do Civil War reenacting), and science research on genetic engineering (for my in-progress SF novel). I love going to SF/F cons, enjoy roleplay gaming, watching movies and TV. (I especially love Farscape on the Sci-Fi Channel.) I love all forms of Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and a ton of other shows and movies. I enjoy reading Misty, Tad Williams, Kate Elliott, Llewellyn, Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, Ursula K. LeGuin, Louise Cooper, Tara K. Harper, and many more! Write me snail mail or email and I'll write you back. :-) Send snail letters via the US Post Awful to: Jennifer Mackay-Douglas, 970 Main Street, Clifton Park, NY 12065.
- From Crystal Sarakas Kocher (crys@stny.rr.com) 26-year-old radio/television producer looking for friends who enjoy long, silly conversations, dreaming of Valdemar and other such things. I would love to hear from old friends that I have lost touch with over the years and from new friends, too!
- From White Winds Soceress Shadow Weaver. I am looking for gothic and sci/fi fantasy events in Ohio/KY/Indiana/West Virginia to merchant at. If you have any info please e-mail cimeshadow@aol.com or snail mail Lisa Brawner at P.O. Box 8335, Lexington, KY 40533-8335.
- From Herald-Mage Hedge Wizard Jensen Redstart/Kat Knafelc dragonfodder@gmail.com. 22-year-old college grad going back for her Master's in Ecology in the fall. Loves reading, writing, fandom, Scooby-Doo and comic books.
