Queen's Own
The Official Mercedes Lackey Fan Club
P.O. Box 749 Laguna Beach, CA 92652 USA
Series 3, Vol. 3, No. 5 May 1, 2002

Heyla, Misty fans!
Wow! Can you believe it? This is our second anniversary issue! A lot of things have happened over the past two years, some of which Moonstar details in this month's note from her. We have had over 53,600 hits to our website, and our traffic continues to grow every week. We are tremendously grateful for the prominent mention we received in The Valdemar Companion, which has helped many former members find us and which has led dozens of future members to us as well. We continue to add and revive chapters. (See their ads below.) We have added an overview of our regional chapters at Chapter directory. Check it out! Please help support your local QO organization. This is part of how we keep our fantastic zines running!
On a related note, Tayledras Royal k'Vesia, the new Dean Arrows Online, a Chapter of Queen's Own, invites you to join him for:
Mercedes Lackey's Book Chat Discussion Wednesday Nights 9-10 EST Reading Room on AOL
This discussion is open to anyone who loves Mercedes Lackey's works; you do not have to be a member of Arrows or QO to participate. Check out the Arrows message boards for the weekly topic.
The official QO trip to the Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire (which was featured in Bedlam's Bard) will be May 19th. If you are planning to attend, let us know so we can make arrangements to meet you either at the front gate at opening or elsewhere during the day.
Do you have a school paper you are particularly proud of or an article that you have written? Perhaps you've seen a movie or read a book and would like to share your thoughts? The Compass Rose, our nonfiction journal, is taking submissions for the next issue, which will hopefully be out in June. You can find submission details at About The Compass Rose.
On the non-Misty front, Ron Brown of RB Publishing sent us the following message:
"L.W. Currey and RB Publishing will soon be releasing Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors: A Bibliography of First Printings of Their Fiction and Non-Fiction--Revised Edition. This book was originally published in 1979, and quickly became the primary resource for collectors and book dealers in determining first edition and state of Science Fiction and Fantasy Books through 1977. It has been out of print since and sells for over $200 when and if found. Mr. Currey has just revised this work and it will be available on CD ROM sometime between May 1, and June 1, 2002. It can be ordered now, however, at a significant PRE-PUBLISHING DISCOUNT. This discount will be for a limited time and for a limited number of copies. If interested, you can go to: http://www.cd-bookshop.com and get more details."
It looks as if Battlestar Galactica will become a 4-hour miniseries, featuring some of the original cast. This endeavor is a tribute to the power of fans to influence what we read and see. For more details, visit http://www.battlestarfanclub.com.
Our interviewee for this issue is Jaime Paz (aka Scout Brightshadow k'Vala), one of the co-Presidents of Golden Grove, the California chapter of Queen's Own.
Zhai'helleva,
Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar
- When did you join Queen's Own?
My persona was approved in the February 2001 newsletter. 2. What got you hooked on Misty's books?
Gryphons (from a computer game and from my love of mytholigical creatures). 3. What else do you read?
Harry Potter, Star Wars (used to anyway), and LotR. 4. What types of music do you listen to?
Almost any, with the exception of music that makes absolutely no sense (heavy metalish stuff). 5. What was the first con you went to?
Haven't been to one yet. 6. What do you like the best about Queen's Own?
There are other people out there that are like me!! We help each other too, personally if it just so happens <g>. 7. Why did you choose to the editor of a Queen's Own fanzine/newsletter?
It needed to be done. A fanzine is important for bringing in more people and expanding our Queen's Own club, and it brings more enjoyment in joining a club as well. 8. What does putting out an issue of your fanzine/newsletter involve?
Considerable time, patience, and the energy and passion to do so. 9. What do you like to see in the way of story and/or art submissions to your fanzine/newsletter?
Any at all, as long as it's based on QO. I'm actually planning myself in submitting a few stories I'm writing up to the fanzine (as well as to the other fanzines) 10. What other projects besides Queen's Own occupy your time?
A story set in the time of Heralds of Valdemar series, only after the events of the Mages Storms and Darian's tale. About another Eastern Empire attack and the return of a demon. More on that later …

Member News:
For definitions of our fannish jargon, read the 12-page booklet "Pros & Cons: An Introduction to Fandom" written by Elizabeth Barrette. Send $1.00 and a $0.34 stamp (or $1.00 and 2 IRCs) to Queen's Own, P.O. Box 749, Laguna Beach, CA, 92652. Make checks payable to "Linda Malcor" in US funds only.
Local chapters:
- Arrows OnLine: Check us out! Arrows OnLine is the official online chapter of Queen's Own. To find them, go to Keyword Mercedes Lackey on AOL. Click on Mercedes Lackey Fandom. You can see their chatroom, Companion's Grove, at that point, but to get to the message boards, click on Message Boards. For the Arrows message boards, click on Mercedes Lackey Fan Group (The other option, Mercedes Lackey's Fiction, is a general discussion of Misty's books and is not part of Arrows.). If you get lost or have additional questions, contact the Arrows Dean, Tayledras Scout Nightwisp "Royal" k'Jeia, at Tayledrasroyal@aol.com.
- Austral'a'in: Austral'a'in is a chapter of QO that has been running for more than five years now. Despite the name, which is a combination of Latin and Shin'a'in for "People of the South", we don't just have members south of the equator. Rather, anyone is welcome! Snail Mail: Austral'a'in, c/o Cassandra Vuksa, P.O. Box 1850, Woden ACT 2606 Australia. E-mail: garou@netspeed.com.au.
- Golden Grove: Membership is open to all. Send all questions to Golden Grove, c/o Theresa Young, 2573 Blue Heron Dr., Hudson, OH 44236. To query by e-mail, contact minna@adelphia.net. Visit our website at Golden Grove for more information. (See ad below.)
- Herald's Waystation: This chapter covers the Gulf Coast Region, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisana, and adjacent. We plan to hold get-togethers during a Rennie Faire centered in these states; details to be announced later. We will have a quarterly snail mail newsletter called Companion's Quarterly. We are not going to charge new members for the first 3 newsletters; after that it will be 75 cents per newsletter. We will also have an online, nonfiction newsletter. Look for details and other fun stuff when we launch our chapter website. Snail mail: Jan Tallevast, Rt 1 Box 137, Milford, Tx 76670. E-mail: heraldauralynn@hotmail.net and HeraldEnyo@gmail.com. For more information visit our website at http://deserthorses.com/heraldswaystation.
- The Vanyel Fan Club: The Vanyel Fan Club is a chapter of QO that started out as an independent fan organization. The chapter is devoted to fans of Herald-Mage Vanyel Ashkevron from The Last Herald-Mage Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey. E-mail: VanyelFanClub@hotmail.com; Herald Bastian, President aka Western Guardian (herald_bastian@hotmail.com); Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn, Guardian of Questions aka Northern Guardian (shashtah@gmail.com); Healer Adept Moonstar, Guardian of Trainees/New Heralds aka Eastern Guardian (healermoon@gmail.com). (The position of Southern Guardian, editor of the VFC newsletter, is currently open. Several people are interviewing for it.) There are currently no dues, but dues will probably be set at $10 per year for people who wish to subscribe to a hardcopy of the newsletter/zine. For more information, see the VFC website at Vanyel Fan Club. Note: The VFC is having a contest. Whoever submits the most stories to a QO zine or the most art to the QO newsletter in 2002 will win a copy of The Last Herald-Mage, the 3-in-1 volume of the Vanyel stories that was a hardcover special edition by GuildAmerica Books. Contact Danya at shashtah@gmail.com for more details. We hope to announce the winner in the December 2002 edition of the QO newsletter.

If you are interested in more information, or have stories or other submissions that you would like to see published, contact me! **Attention all writers and artists:**Austral'a'in is desperately seeking submissions. Collegium News:
We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at Persona handouts and submission instructions.
You need a release form (online at Release form instructions) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.
All personae materials should be sent to the QO address or submitted by e-mail to shashtah@gmail.com and healermoon@gmail.com.
We do not have any new members to announce in this newsletter, but we do have almost five dozen people currently working on their personae. We hope to be welcoming them soon.
Returning Misty fans who have activated their memberships include:
- Herald Liselle Aravon (Trisha Tunis) (Companion: Rhyan) (February 1994) (Mindspeech, Double-strength Fetching)
Welcome back! If you are a returning member who has recently activated your membership in Queen's Own and we have forgotten to list you, message Danya at shashtah@gmail.com, and she'll make sure you are greeted in the next newsletter.
Several former members have returned. Check out Persona directory as well as our Delphi forum to see who has reappeared! (If you know any of the people listed who do not have active memberships, please tell them about us so they can contact us and we can activate their memberships.)

From Healer Adept Moonstar:
Here we are at our two-year anniversary. We currently have about 120 members, and about 80 people currently on our Pending Chat List working on their personas, and several people not on the list that we know are hard at work as well. The club is growing rapidly. Foremer members who happen by the site or read about it in The Valdemar Companion contact us at least once a month. Danya and I are busy trying to keep the website updated and adding more information, including F.A.Q. pages and many informational pages. This year we restructured nearly the entire site, adding more persona types to choose from and ways to advance most of the personas to higher rank. It has helped a great deal that I now live down the street from Danya and can speak with her in person about various tasks we are working on. Also, for those of you who have not sent me your release forms, please do!
I want to thank the Queen's Own folk as well for being so supportive of me. I know many of you know I have some personal relationship problems right now, and I have had nothing but hugs and support from all of you. Thank you so much!
On a happy personal note, I have completed my Petsmart training, and I am now officially a Pet Trainer and will be teaching classes later this week. I graduated a 'Senior Pet Instructor,' which is a higher level than I thought I would graduate and brings more money with it.
I have also finished my surgeries and am nearly finished mending. I would say I am back to 95%. I do not think I will need any more surgeries for a long, long time. With my shoulder surgery, my rotator cuff was damaged but did not need to be rebuilt; the surgeon removed over a ' inch of bone, and it has helped not only my shoulder but my back as well. I did have endometriosis, which was cleaned up, and lots of scar tissue was removed. It is too soon to tell if that is what was causing the pain or not, but I am much recovered from the surgery in any case.
I look forward to hearing from all of you. I read all the fanzines. Please contribute! Many of you are talented writers and artists, and we love to see your work!
Hugs-
Moonstar

Fan Messages:
The newsletter is routinely posted to the Net. If you are concerned about your address falling into unfriendly hands, don't place a fan message! You may answer fan messages without ever placing one yourself. The editors reserve the right to edit--and shorten!--all messages. (Remember to tell your Post Office about your alternative name if you wish to receive mail addressed to your persona at an addressed where you receive mail under your real name.)
The only "fee" for a fan message is to write to two other people. If your mailbox is empty, don't complain--write letters!
- From White Winds Sorceress Shadow Weaver (cimeshadow@aol.com). I am looking for gothic and sci-fi fantasy events in Ohio/KY/Indiana/West Virginia to merchant at. If you have any info please e-mail cimeshadow@aol.com or snail mail Cimeshadow Weaver, 2119 Jasmine Dr., Lexington, KY, 40504.
- From Jennifer Mackay-Douglas (vze28fbf@verizon.net) to all her old pen pals (and some new ones, I hope): I got married in May 99 and I moved around so much I lost track of my old pen pals. My interests include reading soft SF, short stories (primarily Asimov's because of budget), and fantasy. Nonfiction topics I usually read include: vegetarian cooking, pet care, natural health, history (my hubby and I do Civil War reenacting), and science research on genetic engineering (for my in-progress SF novel). I love going to SF/F cons, enjoy roleplay gaming, watching movies and TV. (I especially love Farscape on the Sci-Fi Channel.) I love all forms of Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and a ton of other shows and movies. I enjoy reading Misty, Tad Williams, Kate Elliott, Llewellyn, Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, Ursula K. LeGuin, Louise Cooper, Tara K. Harper, and many more! Write me snail mail or email and I'll write you back. :-) Send snail letters via the US Post Awful to: Jennifer Mackay-Douglas, 970 Main Street, Clifton Park, NY 12065.
- From Crystal Sarakas Kocher (crys@stny.rr.com) 26-year-old radio/television producer looking for friends who enjoy long, silly conversations, dreaming of Valdemar and other such things. I would love to hear from old friends that I have lost touch with over the years and from new friends, too!
- From Herald-Mage Hedge Wizard Jensen Redstart/Kat Knafelc dragonfodder@gmail.com. 22-year-old college grad going back for her Master's in Ecology in the fall. Loves reading, writing, fandom, Scooby-Doo and comic books.
