Series 3, Vol. 3, No. 9 September 1, 2002

Heyla, Misty fans!
For those of you who just can't wait for Exile's Honor (the upcoming novel about Alberich), snippets of the Prologue and first two chapters are now available online at Misty's new site at
There's a bunch of other really cool stuff at the site as well. Poke around a bit! You'll have a lot of fun <g>.
You can see what Herald Auryn Bancroft (Amber Taufen) has been up to at
http://archive.showmenews.com/2002/aug/20020827life002.asp
If any of the rest of you make any headlines, please let us know! We love to hear about and share your accomplishments.
There's a new QO chapter starting in Florida! The Tayledras Companion hopes to have a website at
http://mysticdragons33312.tripod.com/tayledrascompanion/
soon. In the meantime, if you are interested in joining, contact the new chapter at GoldDragon33312@aol.com.
Back in April we told you about Julie Bowman's delightful stuffed Companions that she used to make exclusively for members of Queen's Own. She's willing to start making them again for us. Prices are:
- For a Companion w/o tack (hand painted silver hooves, embroidered blue eyes, white velour body, fake fur mane and tail) - $30
- For a Companion as above, with silver bridal, silver trim on blue velvet blanket w/o silver bells - $40
- For a Companion as above, including silver bells - $75 ( each bell is hand sewn on)
- For a Companion made with real animal fur for mane and tail, an additional $10
You can contact Julie at MythJulie@aol.com or through the Mythical Creations website at http://www.centaur.org/mythjulie/index.html.
Danya would love to get more of the old newsletters online, webpages updated, The Compass Rose coded, and so forth. If you live in Southern California and can help out volunteering to babysit while Danya works on QO stuff, please contact her at shashtah@gmail.com.
This month's interview is with Herald Laliea Shathgran (Toni McQuilken). If you would like to be interviewed for the QO newsletter, please send Danya (shashtah@gmail.com) your answers to the questions listed below. (If you are a fanzine or newsletter editor who has not yet been interviewed, please let Danya know. There is a separate set of questions for editors.)
Zhai'helleva,
Herald-Mage Adept Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar
- When did you join Queen's Own?
August 2001. 2. What got you hooked on Misty's books?
I ran across one in the book store, and as I was looking for a new fantasy series I bought it (It was the Gryphon series.). After those, I was hooked and I now own every Velgarth novel she has put out including the new Valdemar Companion and the short story books. 3. What else do you read?
Just about everything. Literature like Shakespeare, fiction, mystery, fantasy … a better question would be what do I not read. 4. What types of music do you listen to?
Again, there is not much I don't like. I think rap and heavy metal are the only two I don't have in my collection. I just recently discovered Misty's filk, so I am in the process of finding that right now. 5. What movies do you enjoy?
Comedy is my favorite. If I am going to sit still for that long, I want to be amused. 6. What was the first con you went to?
Sadly to say, I have yet to attend any. No time and none close by. 7. Why did you get involved in fandom?
I wanted to learn more about the books and interact with people who love them as much as I do. 8. What do you like best about fandom?
The community. This is the only place I can say something like "I wish my Mindspeech was stronger," or "When will we find out more about Alberich" and not get funny looks. 9. What other things besides Queen's Own occupy your time?
Well, work mostly. I am an Assistant Editor at a magazine. Other than that, I read, cross-stitch (If anyone knows where I can get some Valdemar-related projects, let me know!) and hang out with friends.
[Ed. note: Misty did a couple of patterns for old newsletters. I'm not sure if we can get them to scan, but we'll work on it.] 10. What types of things would you like to see Queen's Own do in the coming years?
Well, I am looking forward to the cookbook … Other than that, maybe have live chats with ML if she is willing.

For definitions of our fannish jargon, read the 12-page booklet "Pros & Cons: An Introduction to Fandom" written by Elizabeth Barrette. Send $1.00 and a $0.34 stamp (or $1.00 and 2 IRCs) to Queen's Own, P.O. Box 749, Laguna Beach, CA, 92652. Make checks payable to "Linda Malcor" in US funds only.
Local chapters:
- Arrows OnLine: Check us out! Arrows OnLine is the official online chapter of Queen's Own. To find them, go to Keyword Mercedes Lackey on AOL. Click on Mercedes Lackey Fandom. You can see their chatroom, Companion's Grove, at that point, but to get to the message boards, click on Message Boards. For the Arrows message boards, click on Mercedes Lackey Fan Group (The other option, Mercedes Lackey's Fiction, is a general discussion of Misty's books and is not part of Arrows.). If you get lost or have additional questions, contact the Arrows Dean, Tayledras Scout Nightwisp "Royal" k'Jeia, at Tayledrasroyal@aol.com.
- Austral'a'in: Austral'a'in is a chapter of QO that has been running for more than five years now. Despite the name, which is a combination of Latin and Shin'a'in for "People of the South", we don't just have members south of the equator. Rather, anyone is welcome! Snail Mail: Austral'a'in, c/o Cassandra Vuksa, P.O. Box 1850, Woden ACT 2606 Australia. E-mail: garou@netspeed.com.au.
- Golden Grove: Membership is open to all. Send all questions to Golden Grove, c/o Theresa Young, 2573 Blue Heron Dr., Hudson, OH 44236. To query by e-mail, contact minna@adelphia.net. Visit our website at Golden Grove for more information. (See ad below.)
- Herald's Waystation: This chapter covers the Gulf Coast Region, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisana, and adjacent. We plan to hold get-togethers during a Rennie Faire centered in these states; details to be announced later. We will have a quarterly snail mail newsletter called Companion's Quarterly. We are not going to charge new members for the first 3 newsletters; after that it will be 75 cents per newsletter. We will also have an online, nonfiction newsletter. Look for details and other fun stuff when we launch our chapter website. Snail mail: Jan Tallevast, Rt 1 Box 137, Milford, Tx 76670. E-mail: heraldauralynn@hotmail.net and HeraldEnyo@gmail.com. For more information visit our website at http://deserthorses.com/heraldswaystation.
- The Vanyel Fan Club: The Vanyel Fan Club is a chapter of QO that started out as an independent fan organization. The chapter is devoted to fans of Herald-Mage Vanyel Ashkevron from The Last Herald-Mage Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey. E-mail: VanyelFanClub@hotmail.com; Herald Bastian, President aka Western Guardian (herald_bastian@hotmail.com); Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn, Guardian of Questions aka Northern Guardian (shashtah@gmail.com); Healer Adept Moonstar, Guardian of Trainees/New Heralds aka Eastern Guardian (healermoon@gmail.com). (The position of Southern Guardian, editor of the VFC newsletter, is currently open. Several people are interviewing for it.) There are currently no dues, but dues will probably be set at $10 per year for people who wish to subscribe to a hardcopy of the newsletter/zine. For more information, see the VFC website at Vanyel Fan Club. Note: The VFC is having a contest. Whoever submits the most stories to a QO zine or the most art to the QO newsletter in 2002 will win a copy of The Last Herald-Mage, the 3-in-1 volume of the Vanyel stories that was a hardcover special edition by GuildAmerica Books. Contact Danya at shashtah@gmail.com for more details. We hope to announce the winner in the December 2002 edition of the QO newsletter.

Collegium News:
We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at Persona handouts and submission instructions.
You need a release form (online at Release form instructions) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.
All personae materials should be sent to the QO address or submitted by e-mail to shashtah@gmail.com and healermoon@gmail.com.

From Healer Adept Moonstar:
Heyla all-
The last few months have been difficult for me. I have filed my divorce paperwork, and, assuming everything goes to plan, it should be final in March. It takes six months from when you start the paperwork until it is done.
I am keeping busy with school and am getting into the programming classes, so I am setting up an older computer with Linux to practice on. I am keeping my GPA in the 3.8 range, so doing okay. I am taking "PROGRAMMING CONCEPTS." I will be learning C++.
I am teaching 10 classes a week now at the Petsmart and juggling my schedule to make sure I have childcare. Luckily, for me I have a great boyfriend who is more than happy to watch Alex while I am at work.
I have found myself locking out the world in order to deal with the mixed feelings about life in general in the last couple of months. I am starting to be caught up with stuff now so I expect that will not be to long in returning E-mails that are sent to me now. <Grin> or at least I hope not.
I enjoy hearing from everyone! I hope your lives are a bit less chaotic than mine. <Grin> I have noticed the chat lists are starting to pick up lots of traffic and that is encouraging, as we are hoping for more submissions of personas. The Pending list has about 80 members, and the club list has a few more. I love to see our club grow!
Hugs-
Moonstar
