Series 3, Vol. 4, No. 11 November 1, 2003

Heyla, Misty fans!
Hope you all had a fabulous Halloween/Samhain! Remember to send us pictures of your costumes if you happened to don something inspired by one of Misty's works. Send e-copies to Danya at shashtah@gmail.com (preferably in jpeg format). Hard copies should be sent to the QO PO Box at the address listed below. We look forward to seeing your creations!
Did anyone meet Misty and Larry at CON†STELLATION XXII: PEGASUS? If so, please write to us and tell us about your experience. We'd love to hear from you!
Thanks go once again to Elizabeth Vines for helping to compile this month's list of Ren. Faires. We appreciate all the help we get from people who send us material and who help to proofread our site. We couldn't do this without you!
Publication News: Exile's Valor, the sequel to Exile's Honor, is scheduled for release this month. This is your reminder that this will be the last major Valdemar book for several years as the series is going on hiatus while Misty concentrates on her other projects. Brain Ships, with Anne McCaffrey and Margaret Ball, is now available, as is Charmed Destinies, which contains three novellas by Misty, Rachel Lee and Catherine Asaro.
Sun In Glory (A Valdemar Anthology) is still scheduled for release in early December; this collection will contain the story of how Talia became a Sun Priest. If the anthology does well, there are hopes that several more such anthologies will be published while we are waiting for the next Valdemar novel. So definitely consider this book for a holiday purchase! This Rough Magic, with Eric Flint and David Freer, remains scheduled for release December 1, 2003. (The Shadow of the Lion, the first book in the series, came out in paperback last month.)
Remember to look for The Fairy Godmother in January 2004. This is Misty's new offering from Harlequin. (Yes, it's an adult romance novel, not fantasy fiction.)
In February 2004, This Scepter'd Isle, with Roberts Gellis, is scheduled to be released in hardcover. A Circus Of Witches, Queen of Air and Darkness, Phoenyx And Ashes and Altan, Book Two in the same series with Joust, are also pending publication. Joust should be out in paperback in March 2004. Stoned Souls, with Josepha Sherman, has had its release date pushed back to January 2005.
Contest: This came in from Paul via the Misty UK list:
"I have a number of bits and pieces, including some Music care of http://Firebirdarts.com, copies of Charmed Destinies and Outstretched Shadow (Well, one copy of that.) and a few other snippets. We're supposed to have some of the Velgarth maps around, but I'm not promising those until I've seen them. Before it ships everything will be signed by at least one of the respective creators. I will get Outstretched Shadow signed by both! That's definitely in the pot.
"Mr. Mallory doesn't come out of his shell much (he and I have that in common perhaps); anyway, I made him grudgingly promise to sign a copy of Shadow. At the time he said that he had only signed one of them to date, so this will be the second copy signed by Mr. M. Perhaps I caught him at a bad time--when he comes out to visit he does miss his dogs ;)
The Rules
"So, all that aside, what do you have to do to enter?
"Send me a picture relevant to Misty and/or Larry. [Ed. note: Paul clarified in a later post that he means 'picture' as in 'photo.'] For example, you skydiving while reading Winds of Change, a copy of Brightly Burning used as a campfire (You think we'd be upset? Heck no. We would hope you'd buy another copy!), or any other clever idea you come up with. Just a fanpic holding the book will count--but I'm betting the winner will be far more imaginative. I can't wait to see the results.
"Pictures must be received as attachments to e-mail sent to mistysdesk@mercedeslackey.com. All pictures MUST be smaller than 80 kilobytes and can be any format you wish. (If you are having size issues, might I recommend jpeg, or jpeg2000 even). Any submission larger than 80 kilobytes will not even make it to my mailbox--I'm setting my spam killer at that line. Beware! If you send a large file and my spam killer decides to blacklist you, that's not my fault.
"No entries to be made to this mailing list. ANYONE doing so, will A) Find the pictures chopped off anyway, and B) Be automatically excluded from the competition. Please don't spam the list!
"Come December, we'll have a look through what we've got, and see which ones to award prizes to. This gives you about six weeks.
"Have fun folks. I know I've laid out the law here, but to run this sort of thing, you have to. I'm hoping this is a fun competition. When sending the pictures, you might want to tell us about them too!
"Paul"
Chapter News: Sapphire and White, the Great Lakes chapter of Queen's Own, has been adopted. See their ad below for more details. Welcome back!
New Address: Misty has a new address! Please send all fanmail and release forms to Mercedes Lackey or Larry Dixon, c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. (Anything sent to the old address will be returned to you as undeliverable.)
Happy Thanksgiving!

Local chapters:
- Arrows OnLine: Contact: Adept Grayfeather k'Varis (Kristi Reed). E-mail: DragonMamaK@aol.com. Arrows OnLine is the AOL chapter of QO. Chats will be held the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 8-10 PM ET. Topics will be posted prior to chat, hopefully as soon as a month in advance for book discussions. Although we have the scheduled chat, the Companion's Grove is open 24/7, and anyone can come in for informal chat. As far as instructions on how to get there … there are lots of hoops to jump through now. Go to the books community, find the message board link, then find the "Author A-Z" message board, and find your way to the Mercedes Lackey boards from there. She's no longer a keyword, but hopefully with more traffic in the future that will change. If you don't want to jump through hoops, you can e-mail me directly, and I'll give you the links. The links to the chatroom will be on my "signature" on the boards.

Children of Velgarth: Editor: Kendra Renaud, P.O. Box 749, Laguna Beach, CA 92652. I publish new and old personae, even previously published persona if asked by members in this new, official QO zine. I will only accept what was sent in for your persona to Queen's Own to be recognized. Any fan fiction written later should be sent to one of the other zines who really need it to keep their zines going. This fanzine will be published periodically when it reaches 80 pages or so to keep costs at $5.00 payable in U.S. funds or 12 IRCs. Make checks payable to "Kendra Renaud". The fee covers the cost of printing and mailing; you may share (but not duplicate!) copies of the fanzine. Watch the Queen's Own newsletter for release dates. Volume 2, Issue 2 is now available! For the contents list and additional information, visit Children of Velgarth. (Special Note: Make sure you use the P.O. Box Address and not my home address since I'm moving at the end of May. I don't want any orders to go astray.)

Companions' Grove: still needs stories, and artists to illustrate stories! (Remember, all contributors get a free copy of the zine in which their work appears.) Volume Eight is full, and awaiting the illustrations and final layout. ** If you contributed a story or promised me artwork for Volume Eight and have not heard from me recently, please get in touch with me, as I had to reformat my hard drive and lost my zine correspondence and address book earlier this year. If I don't hear from you by September 2003, I will have to drop your contribution from the zine. ** Volume Nine is open to submissions. Current prices (not including shipping) are:
- Companions' Grove Volume One - $4.75 (40 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Two - $6.35 (56 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Three - $5.95 (51 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Four - $4.95 (42 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Five - $7.75 (69 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Six - $6.55 (57 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Seven - $5.95 (52 pages, color cover)
- The Danya Winterborn Saga - $5.20 (52 pages, b/w front and back covers)
- Endgame - $3.85(36 pages, b/w cover)
- Fire Eyes - $4.40 (43 pages, b/w cover)
- Shards of Autumn - out of print, see note below
- The Sum of Duty - $5.80 (57 pages, b/w cover)
- Do or Dye: A Guide to Companion Camouflage - $1.25 (20 pages, digest size, b/w cover, saddle stapled)
- Cat's Cradle - $7.60 (76 pages, monochrome green cover)
For orders shipping in the US, I've instituted a maximum shipping cost of $3.85. Multi-zine orders, which can be shipped in a flat rate envelope (usually 3 of the smaller zines, or 2 of the larger zines), will be sent Priority Mail; larger orders will be sent Media Mail Insured, which is only slightly slower and doesn't have the zone rates (which wouldn't work with my shopping cart). Smaller orders will be sent First Class.
I take credit cards via PayPal, which is the cart's only payment option, but the cart can be used to calculate shipping, and checks/money orders mailed to Green Dragon Press, c/o Devin Harris, 4531 N. Kelishan St., Pahrump, NV 89060.
Except as noted, zines are printed on high-quality, bright white paper, comb bound, with cardstock covers. Story excerpts and cover art-as well as submission guidelines and PayPal ordering information-can be found at http://www.greendragonpress.net/misty.htm. To order via snail mail, send check or money order (payable to Devin Harris; US funds only) to Green Dragon Press, c/o Devin Harris, 4531 N. Kelishan St., Pahrump, NV 89060.
Note regarding Shards of Autumn: While this zine is officially out of print and no longer available on the website, a few copies are left over from convention appearances. Any remaining copies from MediaWest will be available at that con until they sell out; the others are being returned to me and will be auctioned off at http://www.auctionfen.com until they are gone. I also occasionally auction off zines which returned from cons a bit shopworn, so it's a good site to check periodically.

From Healer Adept Moonstar k'Vala k'Sheyna:
Halloween promises to be fun as I will be celebrating with Danya and watching the children playing in colorful costumes. My son is to be a blue dragon (shush, it's a secret, and he doesn't know yet). I have been looking forward to this for months.
It seems we are rushing headlong into the holidays, and I barely notice as the months pass us by. I am struggling through Windows 2000 at school as it is mostly a networking class, which specializes in Windows 2000, and is much more difficult than I anticipated.
My vacation last month was fun. Erik and I took a weekend up to Six Flags-Magic Mountain. We didn't get to ride as many rides as we wanted due to long lines, but let me say, "WOW, X is intense!" We are planning another trip for November 9th just for the day.
I am still busy at work, teaching about 14-18 classes a week, and am working on an extra project. I am working on an extra long e-mail about what I would do if I were to change the lesson plans; that is taking up most of my time at work right now.
Additionally, if you all could send me a few positive hopes and thoughts I would appreciate it. They are going to inject my right shoulder with iodine dye and then going to do an MRI on the 10th of November. They think I have torn it up again, less than six months from the last surgery. I am hoping it is just inflamed and sore; let's hope for that.
I love reading all the new submissions coming in, and I wish to hear more about our member personas! I know all of you have ideas about what your persona is doing now: are they on Circuit? Are they running as messengers? Are they still struggling through their lessons? Are they on vacation visiting their family? Have any of the other Tayledras found any additional Pelagirs creatures that haven't yet been named or observed? Is there any more change circles that your personas have helped with? Write it all down and send it to our various newsletters and fanzines. They are all dying for material, and some are dying out for lack of material. I know we are desperately looking for art for the online version of our newsletters. For those of you who immediately think "I can't draw," you have seen the art on the site. We are not looking for the next great artist talent. The only thing we ask is that it comes from your heart; everything that does is great to us.
Okay, so I am stepping down off my box now and wishing all of you a happy and safe Thanksgiving!
Hugs-
Moonstar
