Series 3, Vol. 5, No. 2 February 1, 2004

Heyla, Misty fans!
Happy Valentine's Day! We hope the new year has started out well for all of you. We apologize for this newsletter being late (yet again), but Moonstar and Danya both managed to come down with sinus infections at the same time (yet again). Hopefully our doctors will get their collective acts under control and keep us healthy for next month <g>.
QO Member Published: Adept Starfeather's short story, "Freeing Angel", in the anthology Darker than Tin, Brighter than Sin, which is now available for purchase at:
http://www.cafepress.com/oww_scholarship
The cover price is $8.25 (CA residents to pay sales tax). 100% of all profits will go directly to the OWW-Sf/F/H Scholarship Fund.
Writing Circle: If you would like to contribute a chapter of your own writing to the world of Luna (the one where Misty set The Fairy Godmother), you may do so at:
http://www.electricartists.com/luna/circle/
The instructions from Luna read: "On this page, you will find the outline for the LUNA world, the characters, its origins, the tone of how the story of LUNA should unfold. Writers can submit 1,000 words or less in English via the page or to luna@electricartists.com, and we'll all choose the best submissions to be featured & get a LUNA prize.
"This contest is open to all authors ' published and nonpublished, Harlequin and non-Harlequin.
"Winners will receive a copy of the next Luna book, The Charmed Sphere by Catherine Asaro."
Publication News: This Scepter'd Isle is scheduled for release this month. This is a SERRAted Edge prequel, written with Roberta Gellis. According to Misty, it "takes place in the England of Henry VIII, where the reader will find out about the feud between Keighvin Silverhair and Vidal Dhu and how it began."
Alta (the sequel to Joust) is due out from DAW in March.
In June we can expect to see Wizard Of Karres, coauthored with Flint and Freer, from Baen June.
Phoenyx and Ashes (from the Elemental Mage series) is slated for an October 2004 release, as is Sanctuary (the latter of which is the sequel to Joust and Alta).
Stoned Souls, with Josepha Sherman, is another SERRAted Edge book. This one appears to be on track for 2005. Misty writes that "Conal and Dottie from Fairgrove take a break in Florida while Conal sorts out his troubles stemming from the loss of his twin. Unfortunately, trouble wants to follow … "
Shadow Mountain is the first book of the new Fantasy Trilogy with James Mallory. This has all the High Fantasy trimmings and should appeal to the Robert Jordan audience.
Other items in the works include Elvenbred, A Circus Of Witches, Queen of Air & Darkness, To Light A Candle (with James Mallory; the sequel to Shadow Mountain), Ill Met By Moonlight (with Roberta Gellis; the sequel to This Scepter'd Isle), Much Fall Of Blood (with Flint and Freer; sequel to This Rough Magic), and Music To My Sorrow (with Rosemary Edgehill; the sequel to Mad Maudlin).
Music: We've been receiving a lot of requests lately about where you can obtain filk based on Misty's works. Here's the link to the Firebird Arts and Music site where you can find all of the disks that we know are available: http://firebirdarts.com/music/3music33.shtml.
Have a great February, and we'll see you in March!
Zhai'helleva,
Herald-Mage Adept Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar

Local chapters:
- Arrows OnLine: Contact: Adept Grayfeather k'Varis (Kristi Reed). E-mail: DragonMamaK@aol.com. Arrows OnLine is the AOL chapter of QO. Chats will be held the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 8-10 PM ET. Topics will be posted prior to chat, hopefully as soon as a month in advance for book discussions. Although we have the scheduled chat, the Companion's Grove is open 24/7, and anyone can come in for informal chat. As far as instructions on how to get there … there are lots of hoops to jump through now. Go to the books community, find the message board link, then find the "Author A-Z" message board, and find your way to the Mercedes Lackey boards from there. She's no longer a keyword, but hopefully with more traffic in the future that will change. If you don't want to jump through hoops, you can e-mail me directly, and I'll give you the links. The links to the chatroom will be on my "signature" on the boards.

Companions' Grove: still needs stories, and artists to illustrate stories! (Remember, all contributors get a free copy of the zine in which their work appears.) Volume Eight is full, and awaiting the illustrations and final layout. ** If you contributed a story or promised me artwork for Volume Eight and have not heard from me recently, please get in touch with me, as I had to reformat my hard drive and lost my zine correspondence and address book earlier this year. If I don't hear from you by September 2003, I will have to drop your contribution from the zine. ** Volume Nine is open to submissions. Current prices (not including shipping) are:
- Companions' Grove Volume One - $4.75 (40 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Two - $6.35 (56 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Three - $5.95 (51 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Four - $4.95 (42 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Five - $7.75 (69 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Six - $6.55 (57 pages, color cover)
- Companions' Grove Volume Seven - $5.95 (52 pages, color cover)
- The Danya Winterborn Saga - $5.20 (52 pages, b/w front and back covers)
- Endgame - $3.85(36 pages, b/w cover)
- Fire Eyes - $4.40 (43 pages, b/w cover)
- Shards of Autumn - out of print, see note below
- The Sum of Duty - $5.80 (57 pages, b/w cover)
- Do or Dye: A Guide to Companion Camouflage - $1.25 (20 pages, digest size, b/w cover, saddle stapled)
- Cat's Cradle - $7.60 (76 pages, monochrome green cover)
For orders shipping in the US, I've instituted a maximum shipping cost of $3.85. Multi-zine orders, which can be shipped in a flat rate envelope (usually 3 of the smaller zines, or 2 of the larger zines), will be sent Priority Mail; larger orders will be sent Media Mail Insured, which is only slightly slower and doesn't have the zone rates (which wouldn't work with my shopping cart). Smaller orders will be sent First Class.
I take credit cards via PayPal, which is the cart's only payment option, but the cart can be used to calculate shipping, and checks/money orders mailed to Green Dragon Press, c/o Devin Harris, 4531 N. Kelishan St., Pahrump, NV 89060.
Except as noted, zines are printed on high-quality, bright white paper, comb bound, with cardstock covers. Story excerpts and cover art-as well as submission guidelines and PayPal ordering information-can be found at http://www.greendragonpress.net/misty.htm. To order via snail mail, send check or money order (payable to Devin Harris; US funds only) to Green Dragon Press, c/o Devin Harris, 4531 N. Kelishan St., Pahrump, NV 89060.
Note regarding Shards of Autumn: While this zine is officially out of print and no longer available on the website, a few copies are left over from convention appearances. Any remaining copies from MediaWest will be available at that con until they sell out; the others are being returned to me and will be auctioned off at http://www.auctionfen.com until they are gone. I also occasionally auction off zines which returned from cons a bit shopworn, so it's a good site to check periodically.

From Herald-Mage Adept Danya Winterborn:
Heyla, folks!
I seem to have hit the ground running in 2004. My career is seriously in overdrive. In addition to consulting on the upcoming King Arthur movie, which is scheduled for release in July 2004, I've been approached by National Geographic and the History Channel for information about my work on L. Artorius Castus. For those of you who live in California, it looks as if I will be giving a paper on some aspect of the Sword in the Stone Legend at Cal State Northridge in early April. At the end of April I may be at Ruhr-Universit't Bochum (http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/) to give a talk on some aspect of my research about Castus. Then I hope to pop down to Campania (in Italy) for a couple of days of fieldwork (I've been narrowing down the possibilities for the site of the villa where I think Castus grew up, and I'm hoping that onsite research will yield a firmer answer than the hypotheses I've been working with to date.). It also looks as if I may be giving a paper up in the Bay Area at the AAA (American Anthropological Association) conference the weekend before Thanksgiving. I have two nonfiction books and four novels in the works, plus several short story ideas that I'd really like to get down on paper. Since I'm still spending most of my days (and nights) chasing three littles, I suspect that I'm not going to get as much actually published as I'd like this year, but at least my work is getting some very welcome publicity.
One of the highlights for my year so far was my visit to the Magic Castle (http://www.magiccastle.com/f/). If you can get an invitation to this spectacular private club for magicians, it's well worth the visit. After taking advantage of the valet parking, we entered the Victorian mansion and found ourselves is something that was a cross between a gentlemen's club such as you read about in British novels and a museum honoring the greatest magicians who have ever performed. Much of the elegant woodwork was designed by a man who built props for stage magicians, so it's no surprise that from the foyer you enter the rest of the building by asking an owl (who is flanked by copies of books from the Harry Potter series) to "Open Sesame."
Inside is a maze of halls that lead to a series of bars, dining rooms, museum displays and theaters. The walls are covered with memorabilia, special effect devices (such as holographic images), pictures with moving eyes and loads of other fun stuff. My son really enjoyed the old fashioned, wooden phone booth that looks normal until you step inside and shut the door; at that point the mirror at the back is lit from behind and you see a skeleton talking on a telephone.
We watched a display of prestidigitation by a British magician. A woman (yes, a woman! That's almost unheard of in the world of professional magicians) from Yorkshire demonstrated several card tricks and other bits of close-up magic for us. The stage show opened with an act by a German magician who recently won the Sigfried and Roy award for best newcomer, after which we were treated to a display of stage magic performed by none other than the president of the Academy of Magical Arts, Dale R. Hindman. (I wish I could remember the names of the other fabulous performers we saw, but, alas, I'm absolutely dreadful with names, and the schedule for the day we attended has already been taken down from the website.)
The scariest thing I saw was a card table; just the thought of a bunch of close-up magicians sitting down to a game of poker with an untold number of Aces up their collective sleeves … well, you get the idea. As a Misty fan, the thing that really caught my eye was the banister that leads from a bar on the first floor to a landing that led to another bar and to the dining rooms. The base was a gryphon, and the wings formed the rail. If I ever get the chance to design my own home, I definitely want something like that in it! My son picked up a wand and a deck of Magic Castle cards at the gift shop on the way out. I found a nightlight with a fabulous stained-glass wizard that came home with me as well. I intended to put it in my master bath, but somehow it wound up in my kitchen; it's positively gorgeous <g>! (If you want one, you can order online through their gift store: http://www.magiccastle.com/giftshop/Product_Detail.cfm?Product_ID=117. The name of the one I bought is "Levitation".)
My upcoming adventures will include attending Creation's 12th Annual Grand Slam: The Sci-Fi Summit, March 26-28, in Pasadena, CA. You can find out more about it at http://www.creationent.com/. I'll be attending as a fan, not a guest, but I do plan to wear my QO button! Let me know if you plan to attend.
Zhai'helleva,
Danya
